| Handicap Championships, Napton, Warwickshire Another excellent promotion from MI Racing with superb prizes. Hard race in windy conditions which Roger Iddles seemed not to notice. Catching lone G Jack Watson after a lap and ploughing on alone. Don Parry, Tony Woodcock, Tony Taylor, Barry Jones and Allan Ramsay worked well together until Ramsay, suffering gear trouble dropped off the second time up Priors Marston, narrowly failing to get back on. Watson was finally caught coming into Napton on the Hill, but fought and hung on as the group split to narrowly finish out of the medals. Two special mentions: second A John Beckett, new to LVRC racing and Neil Sutcliffe who was taken to hospital after the race having been found lying in the ditch with head injuries after finishing and apparently heading back to the changing rooms. He was taken into Coventry’s Walsgrave Hospital where he was kept in overnight for observation before being allowed home. 1. Roger Iddles, Stourbridge Velo F 2. GEORGE DREWELL MEMORIAL RACES – REDBRIDGE CYCLING CENTRE (Hog Hill) Sunday 27 September 2009 From Fred Little One hundred and eight riders, probably the largest field ever in the LVRC London & South East Region started the two George Drewell Memorial races held at the Redbridge Cycling Centre on Sunday 27 September. A very large attendance enjoyed fabulous weather, two very exciting races plus three youth category races together with a cycle jumble, a small vintage cycle show, a 60’s photo display as well as the San Fairy Ann CC’s competition rollers. This resulted in perhaps the most spectacular and probably the best ever attended LVRC event together with a prize list and associated raffle of around £2000. Categories E,F,G & H (60yrs plus) The race for Category E,F,G & H (60yrs plus) comprised 50 minutes on the lower circuit and then two and a bit laps of the full circuit taking in three climbs of the ‘Hoggenburg’ before the finish. Forty three riders started and the 65 plus group (Cats F,G&H) were given half a lap start. The race was very lively as there were primes (sprints) on every lap. After about 15 minutes of racing the ‘E’ Category riders caught the F,G&H bunch but it was not long before a group of 8 riders broke clear and they stayed away until the finish. Barry Jones a former professional with Condor/Mackeson now riding for Cycles Dauphin took the honours with Terry Devine (PCA Ciclos Uno) in second place and Reg Smith (DBC Kent) third. Sixty five riders started and the C & D Categories were given a half lap start. The two bunches came together after approximately thirty minutes but it was not long before a group of six riders broke clear. Towards the end of the race the leading group was reduced to three riders, then with three laps to go Colin Roshier (Team Quest) got away on his own and continued to the finish to take the honours. | The race was run in near perfect conditions, warm and sunny with a northerly wind to provide some challenge on the back of the course. The A/B race split early and the break never looked like being caught. The C/D race was a fragmented affair. Splits occurred and rejoined throughout the race with seven DNFs showing that the going was tough. The E/F/G/H race was a much more ordered affair with the group working well together for most of the race. Two riders managed to gain a small gap on the final lap and held on to a ten second lead over the chasing group at the finish. | Autumn Road Race, Audlem, Cheshire Sept 20th This was the first promotion by a new small town club, Audlem CC, less than a year old, but already with 41 members. All riders were agreed that it was a well organised event on a good new course. In the ABC race over 50 miles, a four man break went away at about halfway, just before they were caught Keith Jones went away on his own and rode the last lap alone to take the race. After a number of speculative attacks, the most promising from Phil McCormick, Malcolm Fraser and Bill Belcher came to nothing and Steve Davies emerged from the bunch to take the sprint, two weeks before he leaves for the World Masters in Australia. | Tenth Tour of the East Coast Road Race, Burton Fleming, North Yorkshire, 13th Sept, 2009 A good field and a very good race with a head wind up the long climb to the finish on each circuit. Lee Johnson rode away in fine style on the last lap for the AB section, all keeping themselves together for most of the race – safety in numbers. A similar story in the CD section except that Steve Macklin went away on his own with a lap and a half to go, a superb effort to stay away. In the EFGs there was no surprise when Les West went away with Richard Booth on the second lap, Richard went back to the safety of the group very shortly leaving Les to continue on his own. Westy took time out of the bunch on the climb each lap to finish a minute up, but he did say it hurt his legs! | Race reports from organiser Wayne Thomas: A warm, dry and sunny day greeted the 55 riders at the Stoke Row circuit near Henley on Thames. As ever the tough course was to take its toll, and with several punctures, and one unfortunate crash early in the second race, there were 14 non finishers. Race 1 – A/B/C = Ages 40-54 56m An early breakaway on lap 2 involving John Alderman and Martin Hulbert quickly gained 30 seconds and required some heavy effort to chase down but by the end of lap 3 the field was back together. A classic counter-attack by Chris Beales and Martin O’Grady found the bunch unable to respond and a lead of a minute was quickly established on the next lap. By the bell, Martin O’Grady was out front on his own and despite a sustained chase, came home 20 seconds ahead of the main chase group, with the remains of the field coming in two minutes down. Race 2 – D/E/F/G = Ages 55-70+ - 6 laps 48m The four G-cat (ie. 70+) riders set off with a 5-minute head start, and received an unexpected 2-minute boost when the main field was slowed by a crash on the first downhill section - Norman Bright sustaining a broken shoulder. On the second lap, a break began to form around riders Bill Butterworth, Tony Woodcock and eventual winner Dave McMullen. By the third lap, the gaps had opened to +30 secs, and the G-cat riders were being hauled back at around 2 minutes per lap. By the fourth lap they had been reeled in by the breakaways, now a minute up on the field. At the bell McMullen and Woodcock had dropped all companions and had a comfortable 2 minute lead which they held to the finish line, where McMullen out sprinted Woodcock in the uphill finish. Lap times (in minutes), measured on lead rider, were 22,21,22,21,22 and the G’s lapped at 24 mins until caught. Race 1 A/B/C 1. Martin O'Grady (B), 2. Paul Caton (B), 3. Brendan Heaslip (C), 4. 24/08/2009 - NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS EFGH
| Location : PORTSDOWN, HANTS |

| LVRC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS EFGH The championships for the older age groups were run off in near perfect conditions with a steady breeze off the sea and temperatures in the mid 80's. The very tough course had one steep climb just before the finish , followed by three miles of gradual climbing parallel with the coast, soon after starting each lap,---- as with the events at Leicestershire., In the E category, over 60’s race, the most serious early forays included Dave Woods, Dave Rutherford and Oliver Macpherson. The chasing to bring these riders back created the first selection. A vicious attack on the climb with two laps to go produced the race winning break of Don Parry, Alan Kemp, Dick Naylor and Allan Ramsay. These four were still together the last time up the hill with 1 km to go. Parry attacked but former Milk Race rider, who won the over 55s champs last year Kemp clawed his way back and then outsprinted Parry for the title. Road safety campaigner Ramsay was third and Dick Naylor fourth. In the F race, the first move came on lap 2. Jeff Hardy went away with Pete Jennings gaining a small gap of around 10 secs. The bunch held this gap for half a lap, Derrick Woodings made an attempt to get across, got within 50 metres then folded when they chased me down. The next attack came on the main climb: Tony Woodcock turning a massive gear wound up the speed , John Elliot made it across and these two got up to the leaders. Six gave chase, Woodings, Bob Richards, Ken Haddon, Bill Rains and two others. They were unable to pull the 4 leaders back and this remained so until the last lap when Hardy blew and came back. Jennings also got dropped but was able to solo to the finish in front of the chasers. Woodcock easily beat Elliot for the victory. So the result was a worthy one, the strongest riders gaining a deserved result. The G over 70’s saw ever green Jack Watson--Team Endura--Thule--24/7--M.I.Racing team rider from the North East regain the title he held in 2007, He attacked at the drop of the flag, and was never headed again. Team mate Mick Ives, new to the G’s, broke clear with Brian Dacey when Watson was out of sight. Ives dropped Dacey on the last lap to make it a one/two , for M.I.Racing. Nice to see former Falcon Pro and Milk Race King of the mountains , Ged Coles , back racing again. | LVRC Mstina series - Kentish RR report Last Sunday saw a new event on the Region 9 calendar with the Kentish RR held on the hilly Tenterden circuit near Ashford, Kent. The race was a joint promotion between the Dulwich Paragon and the Kingsnorth International Wheelers. With only one race being held for the D+ category riders the field included a small number of riders who opted to ride out of category. The four G category riders were given a six minute advantage and worked well together to still hold a lead over the main field on the second ascent of the climb to Tenterden, with the bunch still largely intact. On the bell lap Ray Palin took the prime put up by Dave Burwood with Brian Dacey still well placed having been one of the G category group. The bunch had split into two main groups by this stage but the hill had still not caused the expected gaps to appear. At the finish it was Paul Allen of Mark Pickford Cycles who took the win from Dave Farrow with Tony Woodcock in third place and first F category rider. Brian Dacey took seventh place with a great ride on this tough circuit. The race was supported by Nico Sport and EyeLevel Optics who kindly donated products to the prize fund. With twelve events completed in the Mstina series the double points finale in October could still determine the final placings. 1. Paul Allen, Mark Pickford Cycles/Eyelevel (D) 2. Very poor weather conditions with lakes and rivers on the circuit resulted in a large number of non starters, which was a shame as organiser Ivor Thomas had a full field and had to turn entries away. However those who braved the conditions raced hard and most seemed glad to have had a race. A big thanks to the marshals who also braved the conditions. The A/B and C/D races were reduced to 5 laps and 40 miles. The tough course ensured that it was the strongest riders who got out in front.
